Each piece in “Recycled Renewed Repurposed” has been recreated anew from packaging and the Kate Brogdon’s previous work as a visual exploration of thinking and evolution.  Arches Gallery presents her solo feature from 10 July until 2 August at the Workhouse Art Center.

The title suggests nothing is truly finished.  It goes beyond adding new value through a second life into reincarnating old things into a larger picture by becoming once again raw materials.   Reconsidering what is thrown away to build meaningful things from what is no longer useful is more of a metaphor for lines of thought and less an admonition or call to action.

While repurposing reduces what is no longer relevant, or adapts after loss or change, it is also a creative reaction to the unexpected and unplanned. In this updated context, old images create new and sometimes surreal stories. Shifting outdated ideas to more suitable modes of thinking is maybe the best example of recycling and it is a measure of success when we forget where we began, quickly adopting the new versions.

The installation “Following lines of thought” continues the renewal idea with repurposed photo drops surrounded by sparks of light in a chandelier of old and faux materials.  It is not in an expected form; however, it coalesces into a truly new version of a very old thing.

“I continue to explore why people think as they do, using my own thoughts as the means.  By remixing my original work, it creates new layers of meaning and uncovers fresh ideas.  ”

Kate Brogdon was born in Vienna, Austria, and grew up across the United States. She has lived in multiple countries, each place leaving its mark on her imagery and ideas. After earning her bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia, she served 25 years as an active duty Marines and other diverse professional paths, while continuing her artistic studies. Her work has been exhibited across Southern California, Virginia and virtual platforms. Kate currently lives and works in Virginia.

Soft Containers: Inventory of Desire brings together Ch’aekgeori, the What’s in My Bag series, and textile-based accumulations of Happy Meal boxes to examine how objects hold, conceal, and construct desire. Drawing from the historical language of Ch’aekgeori—where books and objects signify knowledge, status, and cultural order—the work reconfigures the still life as a contemporary system of personal and emotional inventory.

In What’s in My Bag, everyday belongings function as intimate archives, mapping identity through what is carried, kept, and revealed. The repeated, fabric-based Happy Meal boxes introduce chance and anticipation: before opening, each container holds a promise shaped by expectation, yet the outcome remains uncertain—sometimes fulfilling desire, sometimes not.

Across these bodies of work, containers become soft, tactile, and unstable structures. They hold not only objects, but projections of longing, memory, and uncertainty—an accumulated inventory of what we hope for, and what we receive.

Yunkyoung Cho is a multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, textile, and installation. Drawing from the visual language of Ch’aekgeori, she explores how objects function as carriers of memory, identity, and desire. Her work reinterprets still-life traditions through contemporary materials and accumulative forms. Cho received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and currently lives and works in Virginia.

Art and creativity are endeavors of the spirit. They emerge from a place beyond intellect — from a deeper realm of intuition, perception, and inner awareness.
In the creative process, forms, colors, and textures reveal themselves to the artist, who becomes a conduit through which the universal spirit manifests into visible form. The works in this series arose through states of receptiveness, contemplation, and openness to that unseen source.

An aesthetic experience is a profound moment of connection between the viewer and the artwork. In that encounter, the boundaries between observer and object begin to dissolve. The painting and the spectator enter into dialogue; perception becomes participation. Through mindful contemplation, art allows us to share our being with what we perceive.

Beauty is not merely something we observe — it is something we enter. The aesthetic experience extends beyond beauty itself into a deeper awareness of form, presence, and meaning. It is through art that artist and viewer meet, connected across space and time by a shared human experience.
It is my hope that these paintings may invite moments of joy, reflection, inspiration, and illumination through the contemplation of art.
Revelations is a collection of eleven paintings, primarily large-format acrylic works on canvas.

Fernando Osorio is a visual artist based between Northern Virginia and Clearwater, Florida. He has exhibited both individually and as part of group shows across the United States and Peru, including in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Lima, and Trujillo. His artistic training includes formal studies in painting, drawing, sculpture, and graphic design at institutions in Lima and Washington, as well as mentorships with renowned artists such as Nicholas Wilton, Steven Aimone, Juan Pastorelli, Cristina Gálvez, and Pamela Caughey.

Every person has a distinct point of view in how they see the world. But how often have you considered other points of view? If you are an earth worm or a hummingbird, what do you see? Or have you thought about the perspective of an extremely tall person or short person and what they encounter in their life? How does that shape their reality? A common saying of "put yourself in someone else's shoes" applies here. Have you ever thought about the point of view of a tree that has shed its leaves for the winter? How about a stream? Or an astronaut?

We invite all to look at each artist's piece and see if you can figure out the Point of View the artist has chosen for each piece of art. It could be something as simple as their own personal view of what excites them in the world or their surroundings. Yet it could be dinner for the hungry butterfly of bee who only sees the flower nectar as a meal. And one more thought, is any Point of View more important than another or is everything extremely important from that person, being or thing that is experiencing existence.

Arches gallery has 17 diverse artists who show their artwork at the Workhouse and have their studios off campus. We each have a book within the gallery which shows many photos of each artists artwork so the viewer can learn more about the artist when they are not gallery sitting. The gallery is installed with art from each artist and dispersed throughout the gallery. We have monthly Featured Artists show. May is a group show with one piece from every artist.

Gary Spellman grew up in Virginia, moved to the west coast where he worked as an artist and staff at the Laguna Beach Sawdust Art Festival. Upon returning to the east coast he works from his studio at the Workhouse Arts Center. He works in oil painting and fused glass.

Working as a painter and fused glass artist, Gary Spellman uses his strong sense of color and composition to bring beauty, imagination, and fun to each enchanting piece. This shows offers the viewers a unique juxtaposition of color in oil and glass.

In celebration of Handwork 2026, Workhouse resident artists Candi Durusu and Sandi Martina are curating W7's first invitational exhibition, "Growing Glass: Instructor Honor Roll." The focus of this exhibit is to honor artists from across the country who have generously shared their talents and knowledge through workshops and classes in the Glasshouse since its opening in 2008.

Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026 is a nationwide semiquincentennial initiative showcasing the importance of handmade, throughout history and in contemporary life. "Growing Glass: Instructor Honor Roll" will be on display in W7 Glasshouse Gallery from May 1 through June 30, 2026. A reception will be held on Saturday, June 13 from 6–9pm.

Candi Durusu began flame working glass in 2008. As time and classes progressed she became more interested in borosilicate/scientific glass, completing courses in 2013–15 with multiple artists. Candi has been a resident artist and instructor at the Workhouse Arts Center since 2017. A love of material and what it does has produced periods of her life immersed in clothing design, culinary professionalism and, currently, glass sculpture. One could say she experiments with media that may, with the proper skill, make verbs visible.

Sandi Martina has a keen eye for design with a degree in Visual Communications. In 2008 her artistic journey expanded after taking a variety of glass classes at the Workhouse Arts Center. A year later Sandi became an emerging glass artist. She is currently a resident artist and instructor in the W7 Glasshouse. Sandi found glass to be an ideal medium to express and bring her creative background and ideas to life.

Wavelength - An exhibit of paintings about the ocean that seeks commonality with the viewer through humor and imagination. Do we share a wavelength?

Phoebe Twichell Peterson is a contemporary landscape painter working primarily in oil, inspired by her connection to the sea and nature. She has had numerous solo and group shows along the East Coast, completed two artist residencies, and is collected nationally. Since 2016, her studio has been at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia where she paints, and enjoys a large community of fellow artists.

Lisa M. Sibley is a Lens-Based artist, Fine Art Photographer, educator, and juror. Her photographic works investigate identity, its relationship to nostalgia, and the beauty in the mundane. Sometimes playful, often contemplative, intimate and emotive; Lisa finds a connectedness to nature while exploring memory, space, place, time, landscape and the Other while constructing visual stories. Informed by the works of Minor White, Gerhard Richter, Shimon Attie, and Duane Michaels, her processes include projection of vernacular photographs, double exposure, photomontage, self-portraiture, alternative processes in film and digital photography, encaustic, the written word and a healthy dose of mindfulness and serendipity. Her work encourages the viewer to see beauty in the mundane, and to reflect and remember their own stories of self-identity, place, and time while constructing their own visual narratives. Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally. She holds an MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design, Cambridge, MA and BA from Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL. Lisa works between Florida and Northern Virginia. She grew up in the Tampa Bay area and enjoys serendipitously traipsing through landscapes, kayaking in search of abstract imagery and being RaRa to four fabulous humans.

Lisa Sibley will present an artist talk at 7:00 PM during her featured solo artist reception. She is considering raffling a large free-hanging canvas (40 x 60 inches) as part of the evening’s programming. Postcards will be available, along with a limited-edition zine designed as an art piece, which will be offered for sale

"Artifacts of the Absurd" is a series of self-portraits of Claire R Lynch’s bipolar disorder depicted in alien, yet familiar, abstracted animalistic forms. These artifacts articulate elements of mood shifts through tangible sculptures that create space for personal reflection and categorical analysis in a cabinet of curiosities setting, where the absurd can be marveled and scrutinized.

Claire R Lynch was born in Arlington, Virginia and began her sculpture practice while at Stanford University. Lynch graduated in 2014 with a BA in Art Practice and was the recipient of the Louis Sudler Prize for Performing and Creative Arts from Stanford University. In 2014, Lynch moved her practice to San Francisco, California, where she completed residencies at Recology and Root Division, and was the recipient of the Blau-Gold Fellowship. In 2017, Lynch returned to the east coast to pursue her MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in the Rinehart School for Sculpture program. At MICA, Lynch was the recipient of the Perna Krick ‘31 and Reuben Kramer ‘32 Fellowship, the Amalie Rothschild ‘34 Fellowship, the Sidney Lake Award, Outstanding Student-Achievement Nomination, and the Graduate Merit Scholarship. Lynch graduated with her MFA in spring of 2019. In 2024, Lynch became a studio artist at the Workhouse Arts Center in Virginia.

As a flameworker, Tracey Howard is drawn to the immediacy of melting a simple glass rod and transforming it into a piece of wearable art. She views jewelry as a form of adornment and personal expression—an outward reflection of feelings, preferences, and individuality. With each piece she creates, Tracey hopes to spark joy, inviting the wearer to smile and to appreciate the beauty and versatility of glass.

This exhibit features wearable art pieces crafted from glass that has been skillfully formed into chains. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, select pieces incorporate heart motifs, adding a playful and romantic touch.

Tracey has been working with glass for more than 20 years, beginning her artistic journey in stained glass before discovering her true passion in flameworked glass. She has served as an instructor at the Workhouse Arts Center for several years, teaching both soft glass and borosilicate (“boro”) Try Me workshops, multi-week classes, and WMAI courses. Tracey is a resident artist in the Glass House (W7), where she continues to create and inspire.

Creating a work of beauty from a blank canvas lifts the spirit and transcends the mind. Karen Kozojet Ching's style is a fusion of impressionism and abstract expressionism. The brushstrokes dance across the canvas in a rhythmic burst of color. The luminosity is achieved through a series of transparent glazes. The Fairfax Station, Virginia artist adds textural elements with sgraffito, impasto, drips, spatter, collage, and iridescent and metallic paints.

Karen Kozojet Ching captures the essence of awe through her art. Each piece reflects her profound connection with the natural world. The landscape, seascape and garden paintings are inspired by her travels and local surroundings. Her paintings are not just visuals; they are experiences.

Everyday each person walks through their life and sees a wide range of colors in all their various tints & shades. And different environments can drastically change the amounts and varieties of colors seen. How do you see the world? Different people's eyes receive the world of color differently too. Some see lots of color while others see no color at all and the ranges in between.We have created an exhibit in which we have taken away the color (noise) and distraction that color can supply. We invite you to explore the art in this show with the absence of color. How do the objects and subjects look different? How does nature look different? The world of black, white and a wide array of grays can give off a different energy. What once looked subdued or serene might look eerie or unsettling. "A look into Genius" is a take on Grant Baudoin's life in art throughout an extended period of time during and after art college.   The art pieces in this show vary in medium from charcoal, to acrylic, and ink.  The first Painting when walking in is an Acrylic medium ONE LOVE in a "Heart NE" form.  inside the Symbols is a silhouette of Lake Martin Swamp.  The next pieces are charcoal Master Copies of Norman Rockwell and JC Leyendecker ink paintings.  The fourth piece is an abstract painting created with throwing paint at the canvas and finishing with brush strokes.  Moving to the inside walls is a painting of an Orange Sunset with a tree setting the bright sun over a sea coast.  Next is a set of stipplings called Quotes by delusional people.  inside the cube are New Orleans accented art.  One stippling of Jack Kerouac in the middle of two ink landscapes of New Orleans. Adjacent the Ink drawings are of the french quarter in New Orleans.  On the outside wall near the windows is an arylic painting of The French Quarter and Natchez steam Boat.  Pass that and walking towards the front Albert Ensteins eyes pull you out from the side into the opening of a set of Campus watercolor paintings.  As you experience the art and view a take on Grant Baudion's life, enjoy your Jounrey through his look into Genius.

Grant Baudoin has been making art since he was six years old with a conviction to be the greatest artist that ever lived.  From Art School in San Francisco to Selling Art in Jackson Square, to teaching others how to elevate their art skills, Grant is firmly on the path to recognizing his childhood dream of becoming the greatest artist that ever lived.

Cameron Porter has been an award-winning professional artist for almost 30 years. He had a successful 20-year career in the animation industry, including a stint on The Simpsons TV show and movie. SInce 2017, he has focused mostly on fine art in wood and sharing the process on his YouTube channel, Cammie's Garage. Cameron’s show is a collection of wood art pieces, including new works.
